USB-C ports, charging ICs, and power rails
The USB-C charging port on a Nintendo Switch is a mechanical connector soldered directly to the motherboard, and it takes every insertion of the charging cable over the console’s life. That makes it one of the more common board-level failure points: pins that crack loose, pads that lift and stop making contact, or a shell that’s been pried or twisted at until the solder joints underneath give out entirely. Beyond the port itself, the same board carries the charging IC and the power-rail components that regulate and route input from the cable, and those fail too: a console that won’t charge, won’t power on or boot, or that went dead after a cheap or faulty third-party charger is usually a fault somewhere in that same charging path rather than a dead motherboard outright.
Why this is microsoldering work
A damaged USB-C port is a fine-pitch connector reflow-soldered to a dense, multi-layer board with little room to work around it, and nothing about it unplugs or reseats. Removing a failed port and installing a replacement without damaging the surrounding pads or adjacent components takes rework equipment and a steady hand well beyond a screwdriver and a spare part. This bench is set up to do that rework directly, along with diagnosing and reworking the charging IC and power-rail faults that live on the same section of board, treating the port, the IC, and the rail as one job on one board.
Repair the original board
The alternative offered for a lot of these faults is a full board or unit swap, which erases the console’s stored data, save files, and system configuration in the process. Board-level repair works on the console’s own motherboard, so a charging-port replacement or a power-rail fix keeps the original hardware, and everything on it, intact rather than starting over on a different board. That matters more for a handheld console than it might for other electronics, since a Switch’s saves and configuration live on the unit itself rather than somewhere easily recovered after a swap.
