Tracing an amplifier fault to a stage
An integrated amp, power amp, preamp, or stereo receiver breaks down into a power supply, driver and output stages for each channel, a protection circuit, and, in a receiver, a preamp/tuner section feeding those stages. A dead channel usually isolates to the output stage feeding that one channel; hum or buzz across both channels points at supply filtering instead. Distorted or weak output can mean a driver stage biased out of spec, or an output device that’s degraded rather than fully failed. A protection relay that won’t engage is rarely the fault by itself; more often it’s the amp declining to pass signal because it has already detected a problem elsewhere in the circuit. Faults that only appear after the unit has warmed up point toward a component whose values shift with heat, which is a different diagnostic path than a fault that’s present from power-on.
Age is the failure mode
Electrolytic capacitors dry out over decades, bias points drift, switch and relay contacts oxidize, and solder joints crack from repeated heat cycling, and the same pattern shows up across integrated amps, power amps, preamps, and stereo receivers regardless of brand. None of that is a design flaw; it’s what happens to any electronics after enough time and heat cycles, and a unit that ran fine for years can develop these faults with no abuse involved. That makes it a bench-diagnosis problem rather than a parts-swap problem: the fault is usually one aged component rather than the whole board, and for a lot of this gear there’s no modern unit that’s really a substitute, since the model was discontinued decades ago and nothing currently made is a drop-in replacement.
Repair the original
For vintage hi-fi, the original unit is the value: there’s no OEM replacement to buy, and a new amplifier isn’t a stand-in for the one already on the bench. Component-level repair, whether that’s replacing the failed part, rebuilding a power supply, or re-biasing an output stage, keeps the original unit running rather than retiring it. Whether a given fault is repairable is case-by-case and depends on what’s actually failed and what’s still available for it, which is what the diagnosis is for.

Marantz, Pioneer, McIntosh, and Yamaha amplifiers and receivers age the same way, and they come in for the same reasons.
