What fails on a synthesizer
A synthesizer is several boards doing different jobs, and the fault usually sits in one of them. A dead voice on a polyphonic instrument, where most of the keyboard plays and one note or one group of notes stays silent, points at a single voice card or one channel of a shared voice board rather than at the instrument as a whole. Hum, buzz, and noise that got worse over time usually trace back to the power supply. Scratchy pots, sliders, and pitch or mod wheels are worn or dirty components on the panel board. A unit that won’t power on at all, and MIDI that stops sending or receiving, are their own faults with their own signal paths. Each of these is diagnosed at the component level, by following the path back to the part that actually failed.
Custom chips and gear nobody makes parts for
Age is most of the story on this gear. The analog voice chips that define how a lot of these instruments sound went out of production decades ago, the electrolytic capacitors in the supply have had the same decades to dry out, and the panel controls have been turned for years. Service documentation is thin or missing for plenty of these instruments, so part of the work is reverse-engineering the circuit from the board itself when no schematic exists. A drum machine sits in the same category: the voice circuits, the supply, and the outputs age the same way, and the sounds are the reason the box is still wanted.
Repair the board the instrument came with
For most of these instruments there is no replacement board to order, because the part was discontinued along with the instrument. The instrument is the value here, and a sought-after synth is worth repairing on its own board rather than being set aside for a part that no longer exists in supply. Component-level repair, which traces the fault to a specific chip, capacitor, or control rather than swapping an assembly, is often the only path back to a working instrument. Everything is diagnosed and quoted before any work starts.
