What actually fails in a guitar or bass amp
An instrument amp is built around a power supply, a preamp gain stage, a phase inverter, and an output section, tube or solid-state, plus the jacks, pots, and switches that take the brunt of daily handling. Hum or excessive noise that wasn’t there before usually tracks back to the filter capacitors in the power supply. Crackle or intermittent output points at a worn pot, a loose or corroded jack, or a cracked solder joint rather than a dead component. No output at all can mean a failed output stage or a supply rail that’s dropped out entirely, and a dead channel or a bias-related fault helps narrow things down further before any repair is quoted.
Gigged, dropped, and run hot
Guitar and bass amps get gigged: hauled in and out of vehicles, set on stages, plugged and unplugged thousands of times over years of use, and run hot for hours at a stretch. Filter capacitors age faster under that kind of duty cycle, and the solder joints around jacks, pots, footswitch connectors, and tube sockets fatigue and crack from repeated vibration and mechanical stress rather than from a component simply wearing out on its own. Faults of that kind are typical of a gigged amp: a mechanical-electrical failure built up from years of physical handling rather than a single part quietly failing from age alone.
Repair the original circuit
A working vintage or high-end amp isn’t something a catalogue replacement part or a straight board swap can substitute for, because the specific circuit as built is the reason the amp sounds and responds the way it does, and that’s the whole point of keeping it. Board-level repair works on the amp already in hand: tracing a fault to the actual failed component, whether that’s in the power supply, the gain stage, or the output section, and fixing it there rather than defaulting to a wholesale replacement that changes what the amp is.

High-voltage tube-amp work is normal bench capability and handled with the care that circuit demands, but this isn’t a source for tube stock, retail tube sales, re-tubing packages, or speaker and cabinet reconing — none of that is offered here.
