A chartplotter that can’t find itself
A chartplotter or MFD that won’t get a GPS fix, won’t boot, or shows a dark screen is a common but frustrating failure, and it’s rarely a reason to replace a unit that otherwise still has value. Most of these faults trace back to a specific failed component on the main board: a GPS receiver section, a power circuit, or a corroded connection.
Board or screen?
A dark or blank display can mean two very different things: a failed backlight or screen assembly, or a board-level fault feeding it. An unresponsive touchscreen is its own separate failure mode. We diagnose which one it actually is before quoting anything, so you’re not paying to guess.
Multifunction displays (MFDs)
Modern chartplotters are MFDs, running sonar, radar, and navigation off the same board, so a single hardware fault can take out several functions at once. That makes accurate board-level diagnosis more important: replacing the whole unit fixes everything, but it also costs the most.
Corrosion is the recurring cause
Saltwater exposure at the helm, from spray, humidity, and condensation inside a housing, corrodes connectors and traces over time, and it’s one of the most common reasons a chartplotter stops getting a GPS fix or won’t power on at all.

Can a chartplotter that won't get a GPS fix be repaired?
Often, yes — a lost GPS fix is commonly a board-level fault in the GPS receiver circuit or a corroded connection rather than a reason to replace the unit, and a free diagnosis identifies the actual cause first.
My MFD display is dark — is it the screen or the board?
It can be either the screen or backlight assembly, or a board-level fault feeding it, and those two failures need different repairs. The diagnosis identifies which one it is before any quote is given.
Do you repair multifunction displays (MFDs)?
