When a Garmin unit goes dark

A Garmin fishfinder or chartplotter that won’t power on, won’t hold a GPS fix, or has lost its sonar return is usually a specific failed component on the main board, whether a power section, a GPS receiver circuit, or a corroded connector, and none of that is a reason to write the whole unit off. We diagnose down to that fault before recommending anything.

Out of warranty, Garmin’s path is exchange

Once a Garmin marine unit is out of warranty, the manufacturer’s standard path is a flat-rate exchange for a refurbished or new unit rather than a component-level repair of the one you have. Board-level repair is the alternative to that exchange cost for units that are still worth saving.
