Control board, foot pedal, and connectors
A trolling motor’s control board handles speed regulation and the switching that varies motor speed and direction. The foot pedal (or a wireless/hand remote) is its own separate electronics, built around momentary switches, a potentiometer or Hall sensor, and often a small board of its own, and it talks to the control board rather than driving the motor directly. Connectors between all of these carry motor current in an environment that sits at or under the waterline for most of a trip. Dead or erratic speed control, a pedal or remote that gets no response, and a motor that only runs intermittently usually trace back to one of three areas: the control board, the pedal and remote electronics, or a connector. None of them means the whole motor is done.
Saltwater is the routine case here
A trolling motor spends its working life at the waterline, and on the Space Coast that water is salt. Corrosion creeps into connector pins and along board traces well before it’s visible from outside, and a motor that goes under entirely, whether from a capsize, a wave over the transom, or a pedal that takes a dunking, is a routine failure mode around here. A corroded board is frequently recoverable when it’s treated properly and promptly, but that depends on how far the corrosion has spread and how long it sat before being addressed. We don’t know, and don’t promise, until we’ve opened it up, so every case gets diagnosed on its own rather than assumed recoverable.
Repair the original board
When a trolling motor’s control board fails, the manufacturer path is usually a replacement board or a whole new head unit. Board-level repair is the alternative: find the failed component, the corroded trace, or the bad connector on the board that’s already in the motor, and fix that rather than replacing the assembly wholesale. That difference matters most on newer or higher-end trolling motors, where a control board or head-unit replacement can be a significant fraction of what the motor is worth. Repairing the board already in the motor avoids that, and skips swapping out a foot pedal or remote that already matches the rest of the setup.

It does not include the motor itself, the prop, the shaft, the mount, or motor rewinding, all of which are mechanical repairs outside what board-level electronics work covers.
